6 Team Building Getaways Within 90 Minutes of Hanoi
Hanoi is a great city for team building, but sometimes a team needs space: open fields, a lake, fresh air and no traffic outside the window. The good news is that you do not have to go far. Within about 90 minutes of the city center there are lakes, pine forests, mountains and old villages that work well for a corporate team day or an overnight retreat.
Here are six areas we often suggest to companies, with what each one is good for and how to choose between them. Travel times are approximate and depend on traffic and where in Hanoi you start.
1. Ecopark: green space without the long drive
About 30 to 45 minutes from central Hanoi. Ecopark is a large green township to the east of the city, with lakes, lawns and wide park areas. It is the easiest option when the team cannot spare a full travel day.
- Best for: half-day programs, large groups, family days
- Works well with: outdoor challenges, relay games, picnic-style lunches
- Keep in mind: it feels more like a park than the countryside
2. Soc Son: pine forests near the airport
About one hour north of the city. Soc Son sits close to Noi Bai airport and has hills, pine forests and lakes, with resorts and campsites built for groups. It is a good fit when you want a real change of scenery but still need to be back in Hanoi by evening.
- Best for: full-day outdoor team building, camping-style overnights
- Works well with: adventure races, campfire evenings, raft building on a lake
- Keep in mind: check shade and rain shelter for summer dates
3. Dong Mo Lake and Son Tay: big open spaces
About one hour west of Hanoi. The lakes and resorts around Son Tay offer wide lawns and calm water, which makes it easy to run large-scale games for a few hundred people at once.
- Best for: large companies, year-end team days, sports-style events
- Works well with: big group games, stage programs, BBQ dinners
- Keep in mind: book early for weekends in the cool season
4. Duong Lam Ancient Village: culture with a challenge
About one to one and a half hours from Hanoi. Duong Lam is an old village of laterite brick houses, temples and narrow lanes. It suits teams that want to learn something about Vietnamese rural life while working together.
- Best for: mixed teams, international guests, smaller groups
- Works well with: village treasure hunts, cooking with local families, photo challenges
- Keep in mind: people live here, so groups must be respectful and not too loud
5. Ba Vi: mountains and cooler air
About one and a half hours west of Hanoi. At the foot of Ba Vi mountain there are resorts, streams and forest trails. The air is fresher than in the city, and the national park adds a sense of being properly away.
- Best for: overnight retreats, leadership offsites, wellness-focused trips
- Works well with: trekking challenges, team strategy sessions, evening campfires
- Keep in mind: roads into the mountain are slower; allow extra time for coaches
6. Dai Lai Lake: a classic lakeside resort area
About one to one and a half hours north-west of Hanoi. Dai Lai has long been a favorite for company outings. Resorts around the lake have meeting rooms, beaches on the lakeshore and space for both indoor and outdoor activities.
- Best for: combining a meeting with team building, two-day company trips
- Works well with: lakeside games, kayaking, gala dinners
- Keep in mind: in summer, plan water activities for the morning or late afternoon
How to choose the right place for your team
Start with three questions: how much time you have, how many people are coming and what the day should achieve.
- Half a day: stay close, in Ecopark or a venue inside Hanoi
- One full day: Soc Son, Dong Mo or Duong Lam keep the travel time reasonable
- Overnight: Ba Vi and Dai Lai give the group an evening together, which is often the best part of the trip
- Very large groups: pick an area with big open lawns and several resorts close together
Also think about the season. From October to April the weather in northern Vietnam is cooler and drier, which is ideal for outdoor programs. In summer, plan for heat and sudden rain, and make sure the venue has a covered space. Our Hanoi destination guide has more on seasons and venues.
