15 Conference Energizers That Wake Up Any Room

Every conference has a moment when the room goes quiet in the wrong way. It is usually after lunch, or in the middle of a long afternoon of presentations. People are tired, phones come out and the message gets lost. A good energizer fixes this in a few minutes.

Energizers are short activities, usually two to ten minutes, that get people moving, laughing or talking. Here are fifteen that work at conferences and company meetings, with tips on when and how to use them.

When to use an energizer

  • Right after lunch, before the first afternoon session
  • Between two long presentations
  • Before an important session you want people to pay attention to
  • When the room energy is clearly dropping
  • At the start of day two of a multi-day conference

15 conference energizers

1. Stand up if…

The host reads statements such as “stand up if you have worked here more than five years” or “stand up if you had pho for breakfast”. Quick, inclusive and it gets everyone moving. 2 minutes.

2. Rock, paper, scissors tournament

Everyone plays a partner; the loser becomes the winner’s cheering fan. Within minutes the whole room is cheering for two finalists. 5 minutes.

3. Table quiz on the morning session

Three to five quick questions about what was just presented, answered by table on cards or a live poll. It doubles as a recap. 5 minutes.

4. Find someone who…

Each person gets a card of prompts, such as “find someone who has worked in another country”, and must collect names. Great for large conferences with mixed departments. 8 minutes.

5. Two-minute stretch

A short guided stretch, standing beside the chairs. Simple, but very welcome after a long session. 2 minutes.

6. Clap rhythm challenge

The facilitator builds a rhythm that the room repeats, getting faster and more complex. Ends with a big round of applause. 3 minutes.

7. Paper tower race

Each table builds the tallest free-standing tower from ten sheets of paper in five minutes. It is noisy, competitive and easy to set up. 7 minutes.

8. Story chain

Each table writes a story about the company in five years, with each person adding one sentence. Share the best ones on stage. 8 minutes.

9. Silent line-up

Without speaking, the group lines up by birthday or years in the company. It shows how teams communicate without words. 6 minutes.

10. Mirror pairs

In pairs, one person moves slowly and the other mirrors them, then they swap. Calm and focusing, good before an important session. 3 minutes.

11. Count to twenty

The table counts to twenty, one voice at a time, with no order agreed. If two people speak together, they start again. 4 minutes.

12. Desk-to-desk greetings

Everyone greets five people from other tables with a different greeting each time: handshake, bow, wave, fist bump, Vietnamese “xin chào”. 3 minutes.

13. Lucky draw

A short lucky draw using badge numbers. Not active, but it brings people back from coffee on time. 5 minutes.

14. Lightning ideas

Each table has three minutes to write as many ideas as possible on one question linked to the conference theme. The table with the most usable ideas wins. 6 minutes.

15. Wave of thanks

To close the day, each section of the room stands in turn and waves to thank the speakers and organizers. A warm, simple finish. 2 minutes.

How to run energizers well

  • Keep it short: most energizers should last under ten minutes
  • Make it optional to perform: nobody should feel forced onto the stage
  • Use a confident host: the person leading sets the energy
  • Plan the sound: music and a good microphone make a big difference in a large room
  • Think about the room: theater seating limits movement, while round tables allow team tasks
  • Respect culture and seniority: choose activities that do not embarrass senior leaders or guests
